AboutCetearyl Olivate

Cetearyl olivate is the ester of cetearyl alcohol and the fatty acids derived from olive oil. It comes in the form of an oily wax.

It is a non-ionic emulsifier that helps blend ingredients together in cosmetic solutions, usually ones with moisturizing properties. It’s helps soften the skin & hair and gives products a smooth and luxurious feel. It’s most often used in conjunction with sorbitan olivate, and this blend most often appears as Olivem 1000 on an ingredient list. You can find this ingredient in many personal care products such as facial moisturizer, conditioner, anti-aging treatment, sunscreen, shaving cream, eye cream, lip gloss, cleanser, skin fader, scar treatment and body firming lotion.

About Sorbitan Olivate

Sorbitan Olivate, a mild surfactant and emulsifier made from sorbitol and olive oil, is a relatively new chemical on the market. There is not much published data on the ingredient. However, according to MSDS sheets, it is over 90% biodegradable, defined as non-toxic and a non-irritant.

 

What’s the problem with PEG’s?

PEGs are used in cosmetics and personal care products as solvents, thickeners, softeners and moisture carriers.

PEG’s are a penetration enhancer and allow harmful ingredients to be absorbed more readily through the skin.

PEG’s are often manufactured using ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane. Ethylene oxide is a known human carcinogen, may interfere with human development and can harm the nervous system. 1,4 dioxane is a possible human carcinogen and is an environmental toxin. It is impossible to know whether the PEG’s in cosmetic products are contaminated by ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane.
