Coconut (cocos nucifera)

Coconut, (Cocos nucifera), is a member of the palm tree family and the only living species of the genus Cocos. Its endosperm is known as the edible “flesh” of the coconut; when dried it is called copra. The term “coconut” can refer to the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which botanically is a drupe, not a nut.

Coconut, (Cocos nucifera) is a tree that is cultivated for its multiple utilities, mainly for its nutritional and medicinal values. The various products of coconut include tender coconut water, copra (the flesh), coconut oil, raw kernel, coconut cake, coconut toddy, coconut shell and wood-based products, coconut leaves, coir pith etc.

All parts of the coconut palm are used in some way or another in the daily life of the people in the traditional coconut growing areas. It is the unique source of various natural products for the development of medicines against various diseases and for the development of industrial products.

Coconut has numerous medicinal properties such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, anti-dermatophytic, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, immunostimulant.

Coconut water and coconut kernel contain microminerals and nutrients, which are essential to human health, and hence coconut is used primarily as food by the peoples in the globe, mainly in the tropical countries.

You can easily see why the coconut palm is eulogised as ‘Kalpavriksha’, the all giving tree, in Indian classics, is known as “The Tree of Life” in The Philippines and “The tree of a 1,000 uses” in the Malaya language.
